Of course here I am using the word “luck” in its simpler meaning of unforeseen occurrence. Again, these changes of the atmosphere, which produce these effects on the sane, seem, on the insane, in many cases, to be wholly expended in producing fluctuations on the animal spirits (not in bodily effects,) so expended, as if this increase of the vital energies were neither subject to the usual laws of corporeal nor intellectual distribution. He not only feels a sorrow of the same kind with that which they feel, but, as if he had derived a part of it to himself, what he feels seems to alleviate the weight of what they feel. In success and in disappointment, in prosperity and in adversity, before friends and before enemies, he has often been under the necessity of supporting this manhood. When the sense of propriety, when the authority of the judge within the breast, can control this extreme sensibility, that authority must no doubt appear very noble and very great. Because I hate a hypocrite, a time-server, and a slave.
